Twenty-Nine

From where Mars sat on the hood of the SUV, he watched as the battered Jeep rolled into the police station parking lot.

“Cameras are out, boss,” Joey said over the radio.

“All right. Good job,” Mars told him. “You see this old fucker pulling into the lot?”

Mars waited as the sniper settled into position.

“Yessir. Got him.”

“Be ready to sit him down,” Mars said. “Not Old Yeller, I’m thinking more like the movie Misery. Clear?”

“Never saw that one, boss.”

“Christ,” Mars said to Billy. “Are we that old?”

“We?” Billy grinned.

Then Mars was back on the radio.

“What about Karate Kid?”

“Oh yeah. Saw that one.”

“All right then, we’re making connections. So, sweep the leg, okay? Are we clear?”

“Crystal.”

Mars smiled at Billy and said, “Ask and ye shall receive, my friend. We were looking for a way in, a little leverage. I present you with a lever.”

Mars twisted the dial on the radio at his hip and asked Wally, “What’s the frequency they’re using?”

Wally told him and dialled it in.
